Well the tournament was fun, we had some hard fought games, unfortunately we did not come out on top as often as we preffered.
I'm sorry for those this may offend but in the locker room after the game our good buddy had the quote of the tournament. In the 3rd period one of the opponents took what most of us would call a cheap shot on Bryce on of our centers, the player in question is a pretty good player and yes "she" is a "she". Well she was called for 2 minutes for cross checking when she rammed her elbow into the head of Bryce causing him to crash into the boards. A couple of shifts later one of our guys "accidently" gave her a small nudge in the back next to the boards. So when we asked him about it in the locker room after the game......he said....and I quote (if you are under 18 do not read any further).
"I don't care if she has tits, she's going down"!
Sorry for those I offended bringing up "locker room banter" but we all needed a good laugh after an early Sunday morning loss!
Fun Weekend Guys!

Game Video!
Here is some video shot by Billy's wife. It is IMPORTANT to select "watch in HD", then select full screen.
Here is a screen shot of the video on utube.
The link to see the entire game broken into 6 videos is;
http://www.youtube.com/billysug
It is best to watch it on Youtube because you can watch it in the HD mode, the blog won't let you do that!

Here is the a sample where we kept the puck in the Fury's zone for a full minute! Make sure you watch it in HD or you won't see much!

Hockey Night at the AAC
Last Thursday I was fortunate enough to take part in the "Stars Experience"! So you don't know what the Stars Experience is?
It is kinda like fantasy hockey for us old wore out wannabe's. Sure as a kid I grew up dreaming of playing for the Adams Cup...come on in the 70's in Dallas we didn't really know what the Stanley Cup was, the Dallas Stars were still a couple of decades away from showing up so our dream was getting on the ice at the Fair Park Coliseum on $.10 beer night and beating the crap out of the Ft. Worth Red Wings. My dream was always to stand in for Michelle Dumas, then goalie for the Dallas Blackhawks.
Well the Stars Experience is bout the closest I'll ever come to doing that.
About 22 fellow players all showed up about 2:00pm at the American Airlines Center, we entered the building around 3:00pm with our escort and took the stairs down to the basement and one of the auxiliary locker rooms. From there we suited up, walked about 50 yds around a curve and there we stood in the same doors the Zamboni comes out to clean up the sweat and blood from Dallas Stars game.
We took the ice promptly at 3:30pm with me in the net for the "Down Under Pub and Grill" against the Matrix.
We beat each other’s brains out for about an hour...what a blast to actually skate and play on the ice the Stars play on.
After we all grabbed a quick shower we headed up to the old #7 club for an all you can eat buffet, then we grabbed our amazing seats and watched the Stars beat the Blue Jackets in the longest game of the season, a 6-5 win in a shootout!
Here are a few shots taken by one of our teammates, Matt Thibeau, he is a great sports photographer.

Well Dang It!
It seems a small fire at Abercrombie and Fitch shut down the Grapevine Polar Ice last night and all of our games were cancelled!
Hopefully our first D-League game will now be a home game next Sunday at the Stonebriar Ice.
Update to follow!

Finally
Well besides us landing our 3rd win in a row, yes it dates back to our dramatic playoff win last season.
Finally! It only took getting to the 3rd session. At 9:27 of the 2nd period Vince passed the puck from the low left corner to Michael who skated in, took a shot and hammered if off the post. As the winger I was in the low slot where the puck banged off the post. I was able to grab the puck in the traffic and pound it 5-hole just past the goalie! Yes finally the first goal of my illustrious career! So I guess I can now go back to defense!
With a win last week over the Ice Rats, and this week over the Ice Hogs I expect a bit of a testy game as the schedule has us lined up against the Ice Hogs again this week. Don't miss the fun, see you Saturday night @ 8:30pm...center ice at the Stars Center!

Crazy Crazy Week - Lets Play Some Hockey!
This week has just been crazy!
Putting the final pieces together for the new D-League team has been a tremendous amount of work. Along with that we've had way to much drama with the I-League team with schedule changes and differences of opinions on what the captains feel is the way to go about getting things done.
Just so you guys know (teammates), we are all fighting hard behind the scenes to keep the hockey a load of fun!
So the weekend is here and we finally get to play some hockey.
Last weekend the I-League team had its best win yet, we defeated the Ice Rats...hmmmm...I wonder if it had anything to do with me not being able to play!
So this week we have another tough game and the D-League team will take the ice Sunday night in Grapevine for the first time as the Frisco Blackhawks! We are one roster spot short of having a full team, but I have no doubt that spot will get filled in the next few days.
So enough with the coordinator stuff...IT IS HOCKEY TIME!
I-League - This Saturday 6:00pm Stars Center
D-League - This Sunday 6:45pm Grapevine

New D League Team
What a busy week this is!
The Frisco Blackhawks start Session 3 this Saturday night @ 6:15pm, get your popcorn ready!
Also I'm excited to announce that the Frisco Blackawks will now also have a D-League team beginning play with the Metroplex Christian Hockey Association. Our first game will be November 2nd.
A few of the regular Blackhawks from the Stars Center will be playing, last year several of the team members played for the "Octipice" with the home ice being Stonebriar. Now the Octipice will adopt the name and colors of the Blackhawks.
So get ready for a busy and fun winter!

Hanging Out In The Net!
Well last Friday night was a "real first". I did attend two-drop in's prior to Friday night but they were "weak" to say the least. The first drop-in was a total failure as it seems my new goalie skates were way over-sharpened by our good friends at the Stars Center. I had them re-done and did manage to get the pads on for a brief yet tiresome workout mid last week.
So Friday night I felt was my first real experience between the pipes! I attended the Friday night I-League session over in Grapevine. The other Stars Center really need to take a look at what is going on over there.
Every friday night you can drop-in or pay for the entire 12 week session, the I-League runs from 9:00pm to 10:15pm....or until they need the ice. The cost is $20 but there are usually 3 or 4 coaches who will run drills and then run a simulated game. Wow was it awesome, I had 2 goalie coaches!
The next couple of weeks will be straight games, you guys really should attend this!
So back to me....it is all about me anyway!
So I slapped on my new RBK 8K pads and hit the ice, the first 30 minutes was pretty tough, it's not like I'm 25 anymore! Vinny spent most of the night shadowing me as he was the coach assigned to teach me the ropes. We worked on all kinds of stuff, in fact almost too much stuff!
He really helped with some basic technique as well as positioning, the cool thing is the positioning and "marks" he showed me will really help me as a "player" not just as a goalie.
Well the hardest part of being a goalie is not the 100 mph heaters....it is actually the motion of going into the butterfly and then having to get backup quickly. If you could only imagine adding about 30 lbs of gear and doing the squats for an hour and a half. I never thought of that in this quest to be a net minder.
Well more updates will come later, I can't attend this Friday night due to shooting a wedding....
You guys need to join me!

3rd Session - First Practice
Thanks for those that showed up for the 1st practice of the 3rd session.
Wow! Have we increased the talent on the roster and sub-list. It looks like our two full time roster members, Brett and Michael, will be a big help to the team.
Overall I was very pleased with the turnout for the practice. Next week look for us to spend quite a bit of time working on the break-out as well as puck possession in the offensive zone.
As a team I do think we can "skate" with just about any team on the ice. The one thing that did seem to stand out is we are a really bad team when it comes to making passes and catching passes!
I'd really encourage everyone, myself included to get a stick in your hand and really work on the eye hand coordination! You can get a tennis ball and just push it around your garage floor or back patio. Practice hitting it against a wall and catching the rebound. I'd really like to see if we can get better at catching and receiving passes.
I know I will be attending some Stick and Pucks as well as drop-ins to work on this myself!
Don't forget next practice is Saturday night at 9:45pm.
I need everyone to let me know if they will be attending the first game. I'd like to try and have lines made for practice so we can all start to get to know our new line mates!

WOW! What a game!
Last night was the most exciting sports event I've ever participated in!
I'll write the full details once I see the box score but......
At one point we were down 4 - 1....with less than 3:00 remaining in the game we were down 5 - 3. The Misfits lived up to their name and committed a couple of crucial penalties giving us a 5 on 3 advantage. At that point we decided to pull Kelly from the net giving us a 6 on 3 advantage. It didn't take long to score and now we were down by one goal.
Each team had the puck a couple of times with time running out. The Misfits cleared the puck to our zone with 9 seconds remaining. Bryce managed to grab the puck, skate the length of the ice while the bench was screaming 6...5...4....3 as the clock ran down. Bryce was able to beat the defense and tied the game by getting his own rebound on his initial shot, the puck went in with 8 tenths of a second remaining in the game! Holy Moly Batman!
In overtime Kelly made the greatest save we have ever seen, the Misfits shot from the right hash mark and Kelly went down and blocked the shot, the rebound came out and the Misfits passed it to the left slot where it was then fired on goal. From his knees Kelly dove across the crease, laid out and stopped the puck with his stick next to the left post.
The defense grabbed the puck, passed it up to Scott who again beat the Misfits down the left side of the ice, fired on goal and made the game winning goal!
What a great way to end a season!

A butt kickin'
Yep,
We did take a butt kickin' last night!
The last game of the season is now less than a week away, we play the misfits who like us have not had the "best" season.
We skate hard, we play hard, we cuss hard, we just don't get the puck in the net!
I feel good about this next game, and this will actually be the first time we will have played the Misfits! It looks like a few regular players will be out but I still think we've got a great shot at getting our 2nd win of the season. If we can pull of a win in this game then we are assured a playoff game and not finishing in the cellar!
Don't forget this week is also I-League appreciation week so there will be food and drinks after the game.
Also we will be getting our packets for the next session so be ready to sign up and get session 3 started.

Stars and Cowboys....both are almost here!
...ahhhh hockey season is not that far away...at least for the NHL....as much as I love hockey though I'm really more excited about the Cowboy season getting started!
Just an update on the summer session for those who follow the blog. We currently stand at 1-4-1, we are actually a better team this year with the games being pretty close. Part of the struggle has been with summer vacations and a few injuries we've not had the full team on the ice very much.
Most of our games are at 6:15pm in Frisco, with next week being the only one not and it is at 8:45pm.
Come on out! WE NEED THE HELP!
On a side note I started a new workout program today at ZOOM SPORTS in Frisco, I'll give you a complete update in another post. They have one of the only "hockey treadmills" in the state right here in Frisco. I hope to get a chance to try it out soon!

Not So Happy Ending - Yet a Great Time!
Well sorry about taking so long to give a brief wrap-up.
The last game ended 2 - 2 after overtime and we ended up with a loss in the shoot-out!
All good things must come to an end, thus the inaugural season of The Frisco Blackhawks. I have to be honest though, back last February when this whole process began I had no idea how great the experience would be.
Let's set aside the dream of getting on the ice and actually PLAYING hockey, as I'm sure most of you have read the March issue of Frisco STYLE Magazine that chronicled the process of buying equipment, taking lessons, and just learning to stand up on the ice, this has been a life dream of mine. I have to say it was more than I ever could have imagined.
The part of this I never anticipated was the people, really when it comes down to enjoying anything, what makes it great is who we have around us.
A few months ago as I began the process of recruiting team members it never occurred to me that I was actually recruiting a new set of great friends.
A big thank you must first go to Coach Modene who was the first to witness my attempt at skating in his Hockey 101 class, who later then took on coaching responsibilities......I kinda think he is pretty impressed with how far this group has come.

From Russ in the Hockey 101 class who garnished the nickname hat-trick....come on Russ it is time to live up to that name, to Vince who I'm not really sure how I met him but has been not only a great teammate but also an instrumental part of the decision making process on the team, we've actually made a pretty good pair on the defensive side of the ice, to Kelly who I met while he was playing drop-in goalie in Plano, to Matt Thibeau who his wife overheard a couple of us talking during an adult skate at the Stars Center, to Brian (who really likes his breakfast at the great Bills Cafe' in McKinney), to Scott who is no doubt the most improved player on the team, Dan who had the only major injury with a broken hand in the 2nd practice who finally got on the ice near the end of the season, Matt Neyra an old golfing buddy (Hey Matt the beer is for AFTER the game!) who actually scored a goal in his first game, Duane who sadly won't make the team the next session. Of course there is big Jon who I think the biggest accomplishment of the season was that he did NOT THROW UP on the bench! We did have a few veterans of the game on the team this year and boy did we rely on them, Emily who I think proved it is not a "no-contact league, to Billy who is really getting his legs under him and has became our main offensive threat, to Caleb who I really enjoyed confusing the hell out of the first few games as he was my center when I played wing, thanks Caleb for showing me where to stand......at least 5 or 6 times! We all will be sorry to lose DK whose work project will carry him back to Canada. There is of course Antoine, he started off the season as the quite type but has also been an instrumental part of the offense. Of course I can't fail to mention Bryce, what a great player, Bryce has been instrumental in helping the team come together. Bryce made a suggestion about 2/3rds of the way through the season that he'd like to move to defense. Of course this scared us since at this point I think he had scored all but one or two of the goals including a hat trick in one of the first games. As we learned Bryce was dead-on as usual as the strategy to move to a defensive team made us competitive in every game after that.
So team...thanks!
I never anticipated meeting an entire new group of friends!

What A Game
Last night was no doubt our best game of the season, a 2-1 win over the Saints. Our defense and goal tending has really stepped it up in the last two games. It looks like we are really coming together as a team and starting to have an identity.
The great thing is we are no longer in the cellar, we have 4 points to the Misfits 3 points.
Next we will have the Tundra Monkeys at 6:15pm, sorry guys I won't make as I'm shooting a wedding.
Don't forget to get me commitments for the next session and jersey money, once we get the white jersey we will be done with those expenses!
The great thing is we are no longer in the cellar, we have 4 points to the Misfits 3 points.

Winding Down
Yep we are starting to wind down season one. We have 3 games left for our inaugural season.
It is time to start thinking about the next session. First practice will be July 12 so we have about a month.
With the next session headed this way we need to go ahead and get our white jerseys ordered this week. If we can get these over with then we can relax a little with team expenses. I'm trying to get a sponsor for the team, I've got one company who is interested. If you are looking to buy a home or sell a home and you need an agent let me know. The potential sponsor is one of the top sellers in the Frisco area. Maybe we could sway him if we helped him get a listing!
See you guys Saturday night!

Sponsor Time
Guys,
It looks like several other teams have been able to secure sponsor's for the team. Here is what we will do.
We need a team sponsor that will cover the cost of our white jerseys, the cost will be around $1600 - $1700 plus the cost of sponsor patch (these run about $15 - $20 each) and we would need 34-36 patches so we could sew them to the lower back of the black and white jerseys.
Here is the deal, if you can get a team sponsor then the TEAM will pay our league fee for the next session. This would prevent each of us from having to pay the $100 for the jersey so I know we can each pony up $15 for your league fee.
We need a sponsor to step up in the next 2 weeks!

NHL Outdoor Game January 1 2009! Lets Go!
Guys,
Here is the story on the outdoor game in Chicago. It will be Detroit vs Chicago on New Years Day. It also looks like it will be at Wrigley Field!
Let's start the discussion now on a road trip for the Frisco Blackhawks to attend this game. It will work well as it is during the time of year most of us can take a few days off.
I'm In!

Blackhawks Spank The Blue Jackets
Well...maybe not really a spankin'!
I don't think any of us thought we'd be fortunate to get our first win in our second game. Bryce, Billy, and Kelly were outstanding in the win Saturday night.
The final score was 5 - 3 in our favor.
The difference this week seemed to be that everyone felt more comfortable on the ice, we did a much better job of keeping the puck out of the middle of the ice on our end.
If you missed this game our next one is this Saturday in Frisco @ 10:00PM, Ya'll come on out!

Coach Mo's Corner
BLACKHAWKS,
First off, good practice last Saturday. Everyone skated well and it appears that everyone has some control over their own feet. Remember, knees bent, butt down, head and chest up and hands away from your body. I believe we are fortunate to have another practice this week instead of a game. Before long you will be sitting on the bench gasping for air wondering what the heck just happened and why is the coach yelling at me.
Here are a few items that you will be thinking to yourself during a game and a few of them you will say out loud between gasps for oxygen.
Is there less oxygen on the bench?
Do we have those paddle thingys on the bench in case my heart stops.
I was lying perfectly flat on my back on the ice, not my fault they scored, the centerman was out of position.
Why doesn’t our D see me wide open standing on their blue line?
How come the right winger doesn’t backcheck? That lazy SOB.
These refs blow, they need to learn how the game is played.
Crap, they have the puck and they are going really fast the other way. There is no way I catch them. That’s ok, our Dmen are good and they will stop him, I don’t need to get back.
Our goalie is a freakin stud.
Two orange cones in front of the net would stop more pucks than our goalie.
After falling: Did you see the size of that rut in the ice? My right skate caught it and down I went.
After fanning on a shot: I hate this stick, it’s too short and slick. Is it broken? There is something not right about this stick.
Why doesn’t he pass?
Why doesn’t he shoot?
This is going to hurt like a mother ____ tomorrow.
What am I doing out here?
Coach is an idiot, he thinks that he knows the game. My 7 year old knows more about this game.
Anyway, I got a little carried away there. I’d like to work on the basics on Friday again. Break out, maybe a little offense. We can go over face offs and probably the Penalty kill and power play. If there are any questions please let me know. I know that there are some first time players so if you are shy about asking in front of everyone, send me an email or call. We are not running any systems, I just want everyone to know basic positions and the fundamentals of the game. I can also go over the basic shots so everyone knows the mechanics.

Jersey Update
Team!
The jerseys are scheduled to arrive Thursday, I've checked the UPS status and everything looks great.
When these come in and if I/we really like them I'm going to go ahead and order me a white one with an upgrade in the material, I'm going to get the one with a fight strap. As well I've got our designer working up a sleeve logo and I'll post it.
The white jersey will be at least $50 more than the black, I'm ordering one for myself just to see what it is like. If anyone else wants one let me know.

Team Update Good News - Not So Good News
Good Evening!
I will send this out in an email tonight or in the morning as well.
I’ve got good news and not as good news!
We had the coordinators meeting this evening and I have all the juicy details.
First let’s get the money out of the way.
We will be signing up as a team so we will pay the “team fee”. This means each person will get around $20 off the price of the league, I still need to figure out the math. Most of the teams divide the cost of the goalie into the players and they do not charge the goalie. With this session I did not know this so I won’t “mandate” this for this session. If 75% of you respond that you do want the goalie fee split amongst all of the players then I will do this, I will not divulge who is for and who is against this. Going forward for the next sessions we will do like the other teams and have our goalie play for free, this is only fair since all the teams do it and the goalie has a much larger investment then we do.
Jersey update….
Now for the not so good news, I will speak with the Jersey folks in the morning to get some clarification;
We will now play our first game on April 18th, instead of April 26th, this is a Friday night and we will play in Plano. I would like to have the uniforms for the first game.
I have sent an email to the jersey guy and asked for a quote on shipping the jerseys 3 day UPS, he was going to ship Canadian Post but I paid out of my pocket to upgrade to 5 day UPS. There also maybe some confusion in the exchange rate for the money, if so I’ll eat that as it will only be $25 or so. What I want to do is spread the extra cost of shipping 3 day instead of 5 day amongst the team. So for example if it cost an extra $180 to get everything 3 day shipping then we’d need each player to pay me $10. So if it is less than $10 per player to expedite the jerseys I’ll make a “corporate” decision to pay the extra and you guys can bring me the difference on Saturday.
The good thing is with the extra savings signing up as a team you will net less money spent even if we need to pay extra to get our jerseys quicker!
My only fear is one of the captains mentioned it took his jerseys 4-6 weeks to get to him because of customs, I’ve been told by the jersey company that we will not have this issue but I do want to confirm this in the morning.
Schedule
April 12th Practice 11:15pm – 12:15am Frisco Stars Center
April 18th Game 1 TBD Plano Stars Center

TBA – This week

It is a full bench!
Welcome, Duane Masengill!
Duane now makes the 16th member so we will now have a full bench, 15 + goalie. Duane will be #4!
I have collected all the jersey money and will be placing the order on Monday. Watch for an email with the spelling, size, and your number.
I'd appreciate a confirmation as I will order from that list.

Adult Drop In Tonight and Jersey Money
Guys and Gals,
I will be attending the Adult Drop In at the FARMERS BRANCH Stars Center tonight, it starts at 8:45pm so we can finish up earlier. I need to hook up with everyone today to get jersey money, I forgot I’m going to be at the race all day tomorrow.
I do have an option for those who can not meet me today, you are welcome to leave a check in the drop box at the magazine office in downtown Frisco. The drop box is located in the rear of the building next to the door that faces east, the driveway goes all the way around the back of the house.
The address is 7776 Main St. and it is at the corner of Dogwood and Main, we share the home/office with Twin Designs.
I really need to get all the checks this weekend in order to place the order on Monday! I will give each of you a call today!

....and the winner is!
Good Morning Hawks (is that cheesy?)......
Well the clear cut winner is logo #1! What I am real curious about is did 15 people actually vote or did Vince just really like number one so he voted 14 times? You do know Vince is a democrat so I would not put it past him!
Don't forget I need your jersey money this weekend, I thought the best chance to play would be at an Adult Drop-In Saturday night in Plano. I swore I saw it on the schedule and now it is not there.
There is a drop-in tonight in Frisco but I know I can't make that.
So give me a call this weekend, I will probably go ahead and play the Adult-Drop In in Grapevine Saturday night @ 9:45pm. I will be around Saturday and Sunday so if I need to meet you somewhere just let me know!

Team News
Good Afternoon!
I had a brief meeting with John McManaman this afternoon and wanted to update you guys on a few things.
There will be a team captain meeting either Wednesday or Thursday of this week, I can't make it Thursday so I may need someone to stand in for me. I will let you know as soon as I know.
John and I discussed a great option and that would be the Blackhawks having either "home" or "away" status the entire season. This would allow us to only have to purchase one jersey, we will know more about this after the team meeting.
I've updated the player roster with "paid" next to the names of those who have registered at the Stars Center, it looks like we could use a few more players as well we need the reaming members to go ahead and get registered.
The first two weeks will be a team practice/scrimmage, I don't know for certain who the team coach will be yet.
It was brought to my attention that in the event of an "odd" number of teams one team each week may have to play on Friday nights in/against Plano. I have/will request we also play 2 games during the year either last or have the Friday night game. This will be Saturday, June 7th and Saturday, June 21st as I have to shoot weddings on those days.
I'm waiting on a little more info from a couple of jersey providers, once I have that info I'll need a check from everyone, I'd also like to get phone numbers from everyone.
Have a great day and let me know if you have any other questions!

Grapevine Adult Drop-In Canceled 3/29/08
Guys and Gals,
I just called Grapevine and the Adult Pickup for tonight has been canceled. I'm going to call around and see if I can find another spot but they are the only weekend location I know of.

Hockey This Weekend!
Guys,
I'm 99% sure I will be doing the lunch thing today (Friday) in Frisco and then Saturday I will be doing the Stick and Puck and the Saturday night pick-up. Kelly (our goalie) and Scott have expressed an interest in heading over to both the stick and puck and the adult pickup. Let me know if anyone else is in!
On another note it looks like it is taking a day and a half for notifications of new post to the blog, is this the same for you guys?
You may want to look at adding a rss feed to your browser and you will get the updates quicker!

Let Me Hear From You!
Guys,
I'd like to start some conversation on who is playing!
Let's use this post to let others know who you are and if you will be playing, it would be great if you'd share some info on yourself/hockey ability/what number you prefer/position or any of that stuff.
I'll start!
I've been skating just over 2 months now, I've skated a bunch and have played pickup hockey at least twice a week. I'm coming along I'd say better than average. Watching the other I-League teams play I'd say I can hold my own with 90% of the players.
I don't care what position and I'm not sure on a number yet, probably #30 or #55.
For those of you who have not read the story in Frisco STYLE Magazine the reason I'm picking the name "Blackhawks" is due to growing up as a kid dreaming of playing for the "Dallas Blackhawks", not the Chicago Blackhawks!

Home of the Frisco Blackhawks
Hey you found us!
This will be the official homepage of the Frisco Blackhawks, a kinda rundown, beat up, couch potato group of guys who are venturing into the world of Hockey.
The history of this fine team goes back (from date of publishing this story) a wopping 2 months.....haha! If you missed it this team is part of continuation to a story in the March Issue of Frisco STYLE Magazine. I'll post a link to the story and some followup posting over on the FSM blog.
Be patient as we get this up and running over the next week.
Don't forget, play begins April 12th at the Frisco Dr. Pepper Stars Center.
Thanks!
Chris Fritchie
